Fellow of Academia Europaea, Director of the Institute of Bee Health, University of Bern, Switzerland。His research covers all aspects of bee health, focusing on behavioural, evolutionary and molecular ecology of honey bees and their pathogens. He leads the COLOSS network, a global initiative to prevent honey bee colony losses, and serves as Vice President of the Apimondia Biology Scientific Commission. He is an internationally recognised authority on honey bee pathology, bee pests and diseases including Varroa mites and Nosema.
